MORE MONEY IN OUR POCKETS

3/31/2012

Yes, it's tax time again, when a young woman's thoughts turn to... money. Some of you may be getting some back from Uncle Sam while some of you may be paying him. A lot of you, I know, are thrifty, so we thought it would be appropriate this month to exchange money-saving tips (and turn it into a contest, of course). Share your clever tips and sage advice here and we'll award someone with a copy of Sheila's self-help novel SMALL CHANGE along with some seed packets to help you save some money on the food bill. You have until midnight April 15th to post. We'll pick a winner and announce on Monday the 16th. Let's share our wisdom!

We always get (3) quotes or check prices at (3) places before making a final decision when buying big ticket items.

I always group my errands together to save on gas. I do a circuitous route going from place to place without backtracking.

I pack my children's lunches for them even though they are in high school now. I buy the snacks in bulk and put them in zip loc baggies rather than pay the high prices for pre-packaged snacks. Also I know they are getting enough nutrition without having to supplement with high priced snacks from a vending machine.

I keep a list of items I'm commonly tempted by, but don't need (trinkets, magazines, etc) and post it on my fridge along with a list of things I'm saving for. It's a good reminder to be wise with my "for fun" purchases and save for things I do or may need.

I clip coupons and match prices and always make sure I shop on senior citizen day for that little extra off.

I use coupons all the time! If we eat out it is with a coupon. I buy our kids clothing at consignment stores and consign things they have grown out of to buy more clothes for them. With 4 kids, this has been a big money saver!

I've only done this once but it was SO cool and I felt very fancy!
You can borrow a piece of art and display it in your home for 4 months, and then take it back and borrow another one....for free!
